SAVING THE KIMBERLEY
The Kimberley is one of the world's last remaining truly pristine coastlines.
It borders the world's largest humpback whale nursery.
It is home to around 45 threatened species of wildlife.
It holds the world's longest trail of intact dinosaur footprints.
It is traditional Indigenous land for over 30 Aboriginal groups, cultures, languages, practices.
It is home to the Gwion Gwion cave paintings - at least 17,000 years old.
It is diverse, wild and still largely unexplored.
And it is under threat
Woodside Petroleum and (WA Premier) Colin Barnett are attempting to convert an area of land called James Price Point in the Kimberley into "the Saudi Arabia of Natural Gas"
The $30 billion project proposal aspires to build the biggest gas refinery in the Southern Hemisphere, splitting indigenous communities and ravaging ecosystems.
The plant would create a 52 square km 'marine dead zone' and release 30,000,000,000 litres of industrial waste water into the ocean every year.
It would emit up to 39 million tonnes of greenhouse gases each year.
The company's joint venture partners include BHP Billiton, Shell and BP, all of whom prefer cheaper alternatives (such as using an alternative, existing facility or using floating platform technology). Chevron have backed out altogether.
Once its gone... its gone.
